Unexpected Korean

These past few weeks have been horrible in terms of my Korean studies. I haven’t had the time or energy to even think about opening my textbooks. Then the semester started on the 28th, so trying to juggle the semester and work has been very anxiety inducing. I haven’t had a full week of it, yet I’m still trying to put it all together in my head. When will I dedicate time to do homework? When will I have time to have a break? Will my performance as a student and an employee suffer?

It’s all very confusing and just thinking about it is upsetting. But I’m trying to take one thing at a time and not get ahead of myself, as I often do. I tend to create problems before they actually arise. Anyway, this post is not going in the direction I thought it would….

Yesterday, I went to the movies with a coworker. I’m glad we are becoming friends because for a while I wasn’t up to making any friends. I found out that she’s into Kpop and Jpop. So we were totally fangirling over 소녀시대 and F(x), which was very exciting. We both don’t know anyone else who likes Korean music, so we have that connection

When we went to watch the movie, “Lucy”, we fangirled over Scarlett Johansson! ㅋㅋㅋ The movie was about a woman named Lucy who unlocks the full potential of her brain because she was exposed to a synthetic drug. She was so badass. Anyway, the bad guys who were after her and the drugs were Korean. They spoke Korean in the movie and most of it was translated through a translator or subtitles. I did not know that there was going to be a Korean element in this movie. But I was really freaking out because I could understand around 40-50% of it! I was picking out certain words and then inferred the rest based on the context. Alot of the words were commands and threats so it wasn’t incredibly difficult. I don’t think I learned any new words because it was very fast and obviously I couldn’t pause the movie. But I’m still proud of myself for being able to pick out words that I have encountered before.

Even slow progress is progress, right?

  1. I hope you get settled in a routine soon so you get to study Korean again 🙂 my usual approach is at least 7 hours of sleep per night and do everything I can not to fall behind on readings inspite of working on the side. Once I fall behind it’s a real struggle to catch up.
I didn’t know they speak Korean in that movie! And how cool that your colleagues shares your interest 🙂

    1. I hope so too! I’m just less stressed and happier when I’m studying Korean. But I’ll have to see what happens. It’s easy to fall behind and hard to catch up, at least in my experience. >.<
YEAH! I was really surprised and glad that I chose that movie to see.
I'm trying to find people that have the same intrests so I was so excited when I found one person 🙂

  2. I feel the same as you sometimes; too busy but wants to learn Korean, and yet have a lot of other things to worry about ;;; but make sure you don’t stress yourself too much, okay? ^^

Andd, your little progress is still a progress! So congrats on that!
    Have a good day ahead~

    1. Your advice and encouragement really means alot ^^ so Thank you! I hope we can both find a balance soon. I hope you have a good day as well~~ ^^

  3. Hey there! I was reading your post and I have to say that I can totally relate to your situation! I have been trying to learn Korean before I go visit again in the summer, yet I have so much work to do that I barely even have time to write about Korea in my blog too. I have been watching these nice YouTube videos, but sometimes, I am just not in the mood. That’s why I kinda made Korean intrude into m life a bit by downloading an application where every time you unlock your phone, it tests your vocabulary in Korean. The app is called ‘Learn Korean Words and Test’. Check it out if you’d like!

    1. That sounds like exactly what I’m going through. I’m counting the days until summer so I can study more. I understand a lot about “not being in the mood” to study lol. That’s the state I constantly live in during the school semester. But I’ll check out that app, I think I’ll like it.

Thanks for commenting and liking my blog. I wish you luck in studying. And I’m jealous that you are going to Korea, have fun. Hope to see you around.

      1. Any time! Thanks for the like back! I just found your blog quite interesting. All the other ones were either outdated or just plain. Are you going to Korea any time soon? I wish you good luck with what you’re doing too and your studies!!! 화이딩!!!! 화이딩!!!!! ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

      2. Thanks! I’m really glad you found my blog interesting. And sadly, no I do not plan on going to Korea any time soon. Maybe in a few years though.

      3. It is a long time! But I don’t feel ready yet and I have to save up money so I can buy lot of stuff ㅋㅋㅋ I’m from the US. What about you?

      4. I’m Greek-American, living in Greece and still in my bachelor’s degree. But I am in my last year of college. I want to try and see if I could find work in Korea for when I finish though. I wouldn’t mind living there either. It is such a beautiful country! That is also part of the reason why I am travelling to Korea this summer. to see if I could survive there. The other reason is because i have a girlfriend there waiting for me. ㅋㅋㅋㅋWhat year are you in college?

      5. I’m also a few months away from graduating with my Bachelor’s degree. I’m glad you get to visit Korea again. I do hear it’s beautiful. I do think that most people can survive there. Wow a girlfriend! That’s so cute and inspiring. I hope you guys have a wonderful summer
